Professor Derek Jewell, Chairman
Derek Jewell
graduated in medicine from the University of Oxford in
1966. After training in general internal medicine
in Oxford and Hammersmith Hospital, London, he returned
to Oxford to train in gastroenterology under Dr Sidney
Truelove.
During that time he
became interested in the therapeutic and immunological
aspects of IBD and was awarded the degree of DPhil for
research into the role of dietary antigens and of immune
complexes in the pathogenesis of these diseases.
He spent over a year in the gastroenterology division at
Stanford University and then took up the post of Senior
Lecturer in medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in
London. Following Dr Truelove's retirement, he
returned to Oxford and was subsequently appointed as
Professor of Gastroenterology.
He has continued to
research the pathogenesis of IBD, especially the genetic
associations, and has been involved in many clinical
trials. He became President of the British Society
of Gastroenterology in 1999. He has published over
300 original papers and has been a member of many
editorial boards.
He was made an
Honorary Fellow of the Ceylon College of Physicians is
2004. In 2007, he was the recipient of a
Mentorship Award from the American Gastroenterological
Association. He is currently President of the
Oxford Medical Alumni.
