In December 2007,
Atlantic Healthcare
announced an agreement with Sigma Pharmaceuticals’ Australian
subsidiary Orphan Australia Pty Ltd, a hospital focused
specialist sales and marketing group, for the commercialisation
of two of its Phase III programmes in the Southern Hemisphere
Atlantic Healthcare
is initially targeting the treatment of pouchitis with
alicaforsen,
for which there is no approved treatment. Having been granted
Orphan Drug status in the USA and Europe and Fast Track Approval
by the US Food and Drug Administration,
Atlantic Healthcare
intends to commence sales of alicaforsen in Europe ahead of its
pivotal Phase III clinical programme, under various “Named Patient
Supply” regulations
Atlantic Healthcare
is also targeting the use of alicaforsen for the treatment of
other inflammatory bowel diseases including left-sided (distal)
colitis
Alicaforsen has a number of potential advantages if current data
are born out in larger scale trials. These include the
tolerability of a topical agent and potential efficacy through a
novel mode of action

in Phase II clinical studies are born out in pivotal studies
